BABY SHOWER CO-ED PARTIES
There is an ever growing trend to have
co-ed baby showers. Many of you have written in and asked for ideas on
what to do when having the father-to-be and his friends present. Here
are a few of our ideas to make both genders feel comfortable in having a
great and memorable time:
1) Not Too Frilly:
Make sure the décor of the party incorporates both male and female
tastes. You can still make it "cute" with pinks and baby blues as well
as with cute
baby shower decorations, but let the daddy-to-be or another male
help in choosing the décor of the party.
2) Food for a King:
Finger sandwiches that are customary at baby showers thrown by the girls
may not provide enough grub for the guys. Make sure to incorporate Hors
d'oeuvres like little pizzas, pigs in a blanket, chicken wings, etc. You
may even go for a larger meal if you think that would be better.
3) Games for All:
Games are great to play even in a mixed group of men and women. Check
out our
baby shower games section and choose games best suited for both
genders. Baby shower games like timed changing diaper relays, baby
madlibs, and other games are fun for both men and women. A great baby
shower game to play with couples is the famous mothers and fathers
game here
(right click to download).
4) The Perfect
Venues: If you are having a baby shower other than a home
party, make sure the place is suited for both men and women! A tea party
atmosphere would bore the men as a restaurant/bar would work well. If it
is a male only baby shower, a day of golf, a concert or bar may be an
alternative and fun venue.
5) Gift Opening
vs. Scratching a Chalkboard: Many women love watching the
baby shower presents being opened at the end of a baby shower. However,
this tradition bores men to tears as they would rather be watching
sports or a good movie to recite lines to. A great idea is to have the
event somewhere where the men can get a drink and watch some tv while
eating the party mix on tables while the women enjoy the age old
tradition of opening cute gifts.
6) Separation of
the Sexes: It is natural for men to gravitate to their
friends and split off from the females. This should be seen as an
appropriate behavior and should cause no stress. Use some baby shower
games to bring the couples and genders back together for at least a
little bit.
7) Baby Shower
Gifts: If gifts are going to be given out to planners or for
winning baby shower games, make sure to choose some
masculine gifts as well as the gifts for the girls. Candles, frames
and Victoria Secret gift certificates will not work for the men but
flasks, wine and gift certificates to a book store or for the movies
may.
8) Conversation
Change: There will be a different dynamic at the baby shower
with a co-ed group. Accept that it will not only be talk about the baby
but also may lead to more roastings, practical jokes, politics, and
sports. The women will be more focused on baby names, clothing, cute
stories and celebrity gossip (yes this is a generalization).
9) Incorporate the
Anima and Animus: Make sure to include a male and female
planner for the baby shower so you have the best of both worlds. This
will make for a much more successful baby shower as both sexes have a
say in what goes into the party.
10) Pictures,
Pictures, and More Pictures: It is great to make sure to get
a lot of
pictures at the baby shower of the mommy and daddy to be as well as
their friends/couples. These will be great memories to look back on when
the little one grows up and wants to see who was present at his/her baby
shower.
11) Have the
guys do the cookin: (BBQ - make a salad or whatever, be sure
to have a list and keep it simple) While the women go off and do a belly
casting on the soon-to-be-mom and tell their own birthing stories. Then
when mom is done being casted (about ˝ hour) dinner will be ready and
served by the men. The guys will have had a chance to be guys w/o the
girls and the same for the girls, with everyone eating dinner together
and opening
baby
shower gifts at the end of the shower.
12 Baby Shower
Bottle Game - Have the guys be given an 8 oz baby bottle with
milk. See which guy can win by drinking the milk the quickest out of the
baby bottle. A fun game to watch. Thanks to Kate N. on this wonderful
baby shower game idea!
