BABY SHOWER INFORMATION
The baby shower has been stated by many sources to be
originated in the late eighteen hundreds and received its name from the
"showering" of love and gifts for the mommy-to-be. The baby shower started as a
tea party for only women who would share the day with the mommy-to-be and her female
family members. The gifts given to the new mom were very practical in nature as well as
handmade.
A
baby shower was
originally offered for the first baby of the mommy-to-be but that tradition has changed to
being for all "new additions" to a family since they are all miracles and
deserve to be showered with love and gifts. Typically, the baby shower is thrown in an
afternoon time on a weekend when everyone can attend.
The person throwing the baby shower
is usually a family member (cousin, aunt, etc.) or close family friend. Originally, one
baby shower would be thrown for a mommy-to-be, but today many women have more than one
party because they have different groups of friends, co-workers and family members.
A baby shower can range from very elegant to very causal,
depending on the mood you would like to set! They can take place at a restaurant, bar,
country club or someone's home and usually don't take place for more than a few hours. It
is customary for the mommy-to-be to receive baby shower gifts from her guests as well as
give gifts out to the women who plan the baby shower.
The baby shower is known for usually serving some type of
food, whether a meal or snacks and can range from being a very inexpensive party to one
that is expensive. It is important to remember that the baby shower party is not about who can spend
the most or impress their baby shower guests, but who can create a memorable time with
great friends and have lots of laughs.
When first planning a baby shower, here
are a few important basic traditional and symbolic aspects to include:
Send out
baby
shower invitations the formal way if possible as everyone love
receiving the invites and placing them on their refrigerators or
organizers. This way, they won't lose an email that may have the
information you sent if you were to only send out an email invite.
Plan
ahead as early as possible and get the feedback from the mommy-to-be on
what type of party she would like to have. It is usually planed by a
friend or family member and all close friends/families should be
invited. It is also common to have a few showers if the groups of
friends and family are large or in different circles of acquaintances.
Bring in baby shower games since it livens
up any shower. Sprinkle them up throughout the event since it will keep
everyone's attention.
Make sure to introduce everyone and possibly
even bring in an ice-breaker so everyone feels comfortable and enjoys
their time. Maybe even makes a new friend!
Showers usually last a few hours. Don't make
it too long or too short. Ask the mommy-to-be on her preference in time,
date and venue if possible.
Make sure you watch
food
allergies when planning the food and drink. Also make sure to keep
it light and not heavy so people are tired from starchy foods. Bring in
the mommy-to-be's favorite kid foods which makes it fun!
Dress up the room with
baby
shower decorations. You can even bring in a
theme
which is fun. Gift
opening is a tradition, so you may want to make a fun
game
out of it like baby shower bingo.
