not wantin' to throw a crappy showe

Here's my problem...mom and dad live 13 hours away and we are throwing an impromptu shower for them. I think it's perfectly fine to request gift cards as the stores may carry different items where they live and they don't have enought room to haul home. HOWEVER-just a side note, even if they did get gifts they don't want to open them in front of everyone....BUT not my question.
My question is, how do you make a baby shower fun and exciting if there are no gifts to open? (Obviously, awesome cake.) Generally games are played while opening gifts to kind of relive the monotony, but you can only play so many games with no gifts. I was thinking of having the attendees make scrapbook pages with messages to baby to be given as a gift when the little one arrives.
Thoughts?....

I hosted a baby shower for a family that lives about 38 hours away. They drove their car down and packed the trunk with gifts. It was really not that big of a deal.

Dont make the shower so long and make sure you put in the invitations that there will be no gift opening if there are gifts so that the guest understand. Also play really fun games and have really good food. Then there shouldnt be a problem. Just get creative in the games that you play. Dont just play a bunch of boring paper games you know. Get some hands on games.

have your invitations read "gift cards to stores" in lieu of gifts. let's face it, not too many of us like being starred at while we open gifts. you don't have to have gift opening to have a fun shower...the shower is about getting together, ect. have fun!

I am planning a card shower as well for my baby. I have about 100 people comming and to open that many gifts gets boring and to even to watch sombody open gifts is not always fun. Its also nice to get money for the things that you do need and to pick out things that go with the babys room, i would hate to get something from somebody and not be able to us it because i have it already or because i just dont like it. To keep people entertained i'm going to have a lot of fun games and give aways, and good food is always a help. Make more time to interact with the people that came to see you and your baby!! you can make it more enjoyable that way!!

Hi, girls
I am planning a gift card shower also. We are going to have the shower after she is born so they will have something to do at the shower other than game. I just don't really know how to word the invations. If any one has any ideas please let me know

I am planning a baby shower for son who lives out of state, as he/fiancee will be visiting. Just a small simple house shower, mostly family, few close friends. Since they are out of state would it be appropriate to suggest gift cards and/or ask that a gift be shipped directly to them after the shower date?
