My best friend is married to a man in the military. She is now pregnant with her first, but is in Japan and doesn't have the money to travel home before the baby comes along... She is feeling very sad that she isn't going to have a shower and family with her first baby, so I want to do something for her. Any ideas?? I was thinking an after baby shower when she is finally able to come home, but i'm not sure of the etiquette... I'll take any ideas! Thank You

MA girl,
I am actually having a baby shower for my daughter who is on the opposite side of States. I'm California and she and her husband live in South Carolina on a military base. I am throwing my first online baby shower. I created and sent evites across the states. The will send the gifts to her ahead of time. My guest and I will set up to be online on the day of the shower through Skype or through ooVoo.com (free conference Web) where we will play interactive games with her, eat food, and watch her open gifts. She also has set up a baby blog where friends and family can follow the journey of her pregnancy by pictures and posts. Hope that gives you some ideas. :-D

google "welcome baby" or "meet the baby" party for after the baby is born
also, I've heard of "long distance parties" where the hostess mails out boxes to the new mommy's friends and family. Boxes include a scrapbook page for them to decorate and send back to hostess, a blank card for new mommy advice, a party favor, a "game/poll" of what the baby will weigh and what day it will arrive, a game "measure moms belly" - guests send back a string of how big they think mom's belly is.
hope this helps!
