I just threw my daughter a baby shower and used a lot of great ideas from this site. Here's one I came up with on my own to get the guests mingling:
Everyone had to draw a number when they arrived. There were two slips of paper with each number 1-8 (because we had a total of 16 guests). Each person had to go around the room to find the other guest with the same number.
When they found their partner, they had to get the following information: her name, how she knows the mom-to-be, and a fond memory of the mom or advice on motherhood. The partners were given a few minutes to get this info and were asked to write it down on paper. While this was going on, I went around to each pair, giving them one of the funny jokes I found here on the site about getting pregnant and parenthood.
After a few minutes, i called everyone's attention and asked them to introduce their partner to the rest of the party. I started by calling out for pair #1... they each took turns telling us their partner's name, how she knew the mom, and the memory or advice she'd like to share. When all partners were done, I asked them to read off the jokes that had been passed out to them.
This was a great way to get guests mingling and my daughter was just thrilled to hear all the fond memories that people had of her. This takes some of the attention off the baby for a few minutes and on to the Mom! Also, we all had some good laughs with the jokes.
If you wind up with an odd number of guests, you can put three together in one group. Each person will introduce one of the other three so that each gets a turn.
Have fun! Gerri DiBartolo
